PS/IS 263M

Public School in Inwood

This mural was designed by Wennie Huang.

It represents the shadow of a giant Tulip tree.  According to legend, Peter Minuit made the deal with the Lenape native Americans to purchase Manhattan for 60 guilders under this tree. It lived until 1935 in Inwood Park, a few blocks away.

I painted it directly on the brick wall of PS/IS 263M in the Inwood section of Manhattan. I used a silicate based mineral stain which becomes part of the brick and is water permeable so that it will last for a very long time. I used five different dilutions of the stain to create the soft edge of the shadow.
